Join A Student WEA State Committee!

Student WEA is a volunteer organization and we depend on our volunteers. Committee members are some of our most important volunteers. Committees drive our organization by examining all the important parts, recommending changes, and by carrying through on projects such as a soon to be scholarship offered by the Student WEA.

Currently, we have seven standing committees (Career Transitions, Educational Issues and Professional Development, Elections and Credentials, Governmental Policy, Outreach to Teach, Public Relations, and Resolutions) and one ad hoc committee (Minority Affairs).

Student WEA Committees meet three times a year. All of the committee meetings will be held at the WEAC Building in Madison (33 Nob Hill, Madison, WI). The meeting dates have been set as follows: Saturday, October 6, 2007; Friday, November 30, 2007; and Friday, February 1, 2008.

If needed, overnight lodging is provided by Student WEA and mileage to committee meetings is reimbursed.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding State Committees, please contact Stacie Ebert, Student WEA State Vice-President, at ebert.stac@students.uwlax.edu

GIVE YOURSELF A HAND!
Congress Gives Final Nod to Legislation Making College More Affordable

September 7, 2007, WASHINGTON, D.C.-Congress today approved the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 helping to make the dream of higher education a reality for most low- and middle-income students. The legislation has been sent to President Bush for final approval. Thanks to those of you that cyberlobbied for this bill by contacting your federal legislators to ask that they support this bill.

FOR YOUR IMMEDIATE CYBERLOBBY ACTION
Cyberlobby for College Affordability in Wisconsin

Spread the word, to members and non-members alike and ask people to take a simple action. Let your Wisconsin legislator know that you want him/her to agree to resolve the budget stalemate and approve the $50 million dollar funding proposal for the state financial aid program.

If you are a Student WEA member, you can utilize the WEAC Cyberlobby Site. Go to http://www.weac.org/capnews.htm and then click on the right side link called WEAC "Cyberlobby.?

If you are talking to non-Student WEA friends, here is the link to the website to find out who his/her legislator is http://waml.legis.state.wi.us/ and a way to send him/her a message.

Here is a sample Cyberlobby Message that you can utilize:

Need-based financial aid programs are critical to ensuring low-income students have access to Wisconsin?s colleges and universities. Programs like the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant provide the resources deserving students need to earn postsecondary degrees.

Resolve the budget stalemate that has left so many low-income students in limbo. Fund the WHEG program at levels proposed by the Governor, Senate, and bi-partisan Joint Finance Committee ? doing so will provide the financial aid resources low-income students need to further their education.
