Throughout the state and country, people are talking about the quality of public education. As future educators, the members of Student WEA have a vested interest in the success of our public schools. We are excited to be entering the teaching profession to work with children and help influence future generations. Yet, we realize that education is not only about teaching in our classrooms. There are other concerns – school budgets which require large class sizes, minimal resources, and less than adequate facilities. Educational policies, such as Revenue Controls, have forced many school districts across the state to cut back on essential spending, especially on maintenance issues.
One way the Student WEA is reaching out to promote positive changes in the community is through our annual Outreach to Teach Project.
Outreach to Teach is a program that Student WEA began, with help from the NEA Student Program, in 1998 in order to focus public attention on the quality of our schools, and help improve the quality of one community a year. The goals of the program are to: 1) Improve the quality of education for all students within the school by improving the quality of their learning environment, including minor school renovations and additional educational resources. 2) Provide assistance to public schools impacted by revenue controls. 3) Promote inter-organizational partnerships within the Association. 4) Increase public awareness of current limitations in public school finance structure.
Student WEA volunteers work to raise money from grants and contributions in order to go into a school and paint, clean, donate supplies, and complete whatever tasks the school staff deem necessary.
Since the inception of the Outreach to Teach program, over 2,000 volunteers have contributed their time, effort, and supplies to improve public education. Over 20 schools have benefited from the project, with countless more in need!
While we can only help one community a year, and are a relatively small, but growing group of individuals, we believe that we will help to improve the quality of Wisconsin’s Public Schools one at a time.
