Wisconsin
Great Teachers Seminar
(PreK-12)

July 25-28, 1999
Sinsinawa Mound Center

The Academy

The WEA Professional Development Academy (PDA), in keeping with its mission to provide quality staff development opportunities, is sponsoring this seminar. Although Great Teachers has been operating nationwide for nearly 30 years, Wisconsin was the first state to offer it to PreK-12 educators.

The Rationale

The focus of this program is on individual classroom performance and the nature of the Great Teacher. It is based on the notion that teachers learn best from one another, and that such learning is most effective if it occurs among participants from a variety of disciplines, levels and years of experience. It recognizes that teachers striving for excellence must know more than specific content material - that the art of teaching itself must be addressed to ensure professional growth.

The Purpose

  • To celebrate great teaching.
  • To encourage educators to venture beyond the limits of their own specializations and environments in search of transferable ideas and the universals of teaching.
  • To promote an atmosphere of introspection and self-appraisal so that participants can seriously review and contemplate their attitudes, methods, and behaviors as teachers.
  • To practice rational analysis of instructional problems and to develop realistic, creative approaches to their solutions.
  • To stimulate the exchange of information and ideas by building an expanding network of communication among PreK-12 teachers.

The Staff

The seminar will be lead by David B. Gottshall, founder of the National Great Teachers Movement, and Rita Lease, Wisconsin coordinator. Other facilitators are former retreat participants.

The Site

The seminar will be held at Sinsinawa Mound Center, an educational facility located in the scenic and serene southwestern corner of Wisconsin. Distances from Sinsinawa include: Madison - 90 miles; La Crosse - 120; Milwaukee - 160; Eau Claire - 270; and Green Bay - 240 miles.

The seminar begins at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, and ends Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
