Wisconsin's Flagship, April 1998

Students from Port Washington High School recently received hands-on training in shipbuilding. They learned how early Wisconsinites constructed the schooners that were common on the Great Lakes. To the left, Kate MacRae (top), Carrie Albinger, and Julianne Klumb (bottom) take measurements for a plank on the underbody of Wisconsin’s Flagship, under construction at Milwaukee’s lakefront. To the right, Owen Jones receives help from project volunteer Harold Kinas in preparing the plank.
