This essay first appeared in 1948 in the Wisconsin Journal of Education in recognition of Wisconsin's centennial celebration. It is re-published here in 1998 in honor of Wisconsin's sesquicentennial. The author is Edgar G. Doudna. Doudna is a former editor of the Wisconsin Journal of Education, was president of the Wisconsin Education Association in 1939 and served as president of the NEA Board of Directors in 1948.
