Relationship Between Number of Cost-Saving Actions and District
Spending Levels
The 307 districts participating in this study report an average per
pupil expenditure in 1996-97 of $6,864 (median = $6,749).(9) Among all
districts this past school year, the mean number of cost-cutting
actions was nearly seven (6.7), while the median number was six.
Although there are differences among higher and lower spending
districts as to the mean and median number of cuts (see Table 3),
these differences are not significant. Keep in mind, however, that the
effects of cuts are not likely to be the same for resource-poor and
resource-rich districts.
