73 Wisconsin teachers added to list of nationally certified teachers in 2006

Number of certified teachers growing fast

• Wisconsin ranked 19th nationwide in the number of new National Board Certified Teachers this year. The state ranked 20th in the total number of teachers who achieved certification over time (402).

• Wisconsin shows a 20% increase in the number of teachers who achieved National Board Certification in 2006 as compared to 2005 (73 in 2006 from 61 in 2005).

• The number of National Board Certified Teachers in Wisconsin has increased more than five fold in the past five years (74 in 2001 to 402 in 2006).

• Nearly 37% of the state’s National Board Certified Teachers teach in Title I schools. (This percentage is based on 353 teachers whose schools could be identified as Title I using NCES criteria.).

• At the Wisconsin NBCT Education Policy Summit (Sheboygan, August 2006), dozens of the state’s National Board Certified Teachers worked with local education leaders and policymakers on creating ways to attract and retain more accomplished teachers for hard-to-staff and high-needs schools. Seventy-three more Wisconsin teachers have earned certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), bringing the total number of state educators who have attained the profession’s highest accreditation to more than 400. All 73 are WEAC members, and 10 are from Milwaukee Public Schools.

“National certification is rigorous,” WEAC President Stan Johnson said Tuesday (January 9, 2007) following the announcement of the new names by the NBPTS. “Teachers dedicate countless hours of their own time to improve their skills and knowledge to help their students in the classroom.”

National Board Certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. A teacher-driven, voluntary process established by NBPTS, certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete and measures what the most accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. As part of the process, teachers build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes, a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching, and an assessment of their knowledge of the subjects they teach.

“Great schools depend on great teachers and staff, and these results once again show us how Wisconsin teachers improve their performance in our state’s classrooms,” Johnson said.

“The single most important school-related factor in raising student achievement is the quality of the teacher in the classroom,” said former Georgia Governor Roy E. Barnes, chair of the NBPTS board of directors. “These teachers are living proof that this process works to generate some of the most highly accomplished teachers in the field.”

WEAC supports members pursuing certification with grants for workshop sessions, costs associated with those sessions, and/or stipends for facilitators of the sessions.
