State Public School Students Outscore Private School Students on SAT

Wisconsin students scored well above the national average on the 2003 SAT college admissions test, according to results released Tuesday (August 26, 2003) by the College Board.

Wisconsin public school students outscored Wisconsin’s private and parochial school students on the test.

The overall average Wisconsin score on the SAT was 1,179, compared to the national average of 1,026. The state’s public school students posted an average SAT score of 1,193, compared to 1,165 for state students at religiously affiliated private schools and 1,126 for students at independent schools.

The SAT results come on the heels of the release of the 2003 ACT college admissions exams, which showed state students scored No. 1 in the nation for the seventh consecutive year.

In Wisconsin, the ACT is the predominant college admissions test, with 69% of graduates taking it. About 7% took the SAT in Wisconsin.
