Two Positions Open on Professional Standards Council for Teachers

WEAC President Stan Johnson is seeking nominations from WEAC members to fill two vacancies on Wisconsin's Professional Standards Council. The vacancies are:

  • Elementary teacher
  • Middle or high school teacher

The Council has been working for more than two years, and was created by the Wisconsin Legislature through 1997 Wis. Act 298.

To date, the Council has been heavily involved in advising the State Superintendent of Public Instruction about Wisconsin’s new teacher licensure rules, PI 34, and other issues.

The nomination materials below detail the responsibilities and roles of the Council's members.

Since the Council began work, teachers, for the first time, have the opportunity to make formal recommendations to the Superintendent of Public Instruction concerning the quality of the teaching profession.

Act 298 directs “the largest statewide labor organization representing teachers” to nominate candidates for membership on the Council that consists of a majority of teachers.

Candidates selected for council membership serve two-year terms. The council has two positions for elementary teachers, two positions for middle/high school teachers, two positions for pupil services teachers, two positions for all K-12 teachers, and one position for a special education teacher.

I am asking for your assistance in finding candidates for an elementary teacher and a middle/high school teacher to sit on the Council. I am required to forward three names for each position to Superintendent Burmaster so that she can make these appointments.

It is critical that new Council members are knowledgeable in their fields and willing and able to actively contribute to the future development of the education profession. Nominations are due in my office by Friday, June 10.

Sincerely,

Stan Johnson
WEAC President
