Effort Battles Youth Violence

The Wisconsin Medical Society is joining with WEAC to promote the prevention of youth violence.

The physicians organization announced in September a major campaign to prevent school violence and bullying.

WEAC Vice President Terry Meyer told a Madison news conference that violence is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

“We should expect our great schools to be safe havens for kids in every community in Wisconsin,” he told reporters.

“Safe, orderly, disciplined schools are a key to student achievement. Kids can’t learn if there are disruptive or physically threatening kids in their classrooms, the playground or school grounds. Classrooms can’t work if there are interruptions or distractions.

“Our great teachers can’t teach if they are worried about disruptive children.”

Meyer added that WEAC and the Wisconsin Medical Society are devoting a full track at the October 23-25 WEAC Convention devoted to youth violence prevention.
