Group Plans 240-Mile Trip to the Capitol

Walkers made their way to Medford during the fifth day of "Walk on the Child's Side." The walk will end with a rally in Madison on June 28.

Groups of concerned citizens from around the state are traveling along Hwy. 13 to deliver a message to Gov. Scott McCallum - by foot.

They started the walk, the third-annual "Walk on the Child's Side," on June 16 in Butternut, Wis. Walkers plan to follow Highway 13 to the state capitol on June 28 where a rally will be held.

"Walk on the Child's Side" is a protest against state-imposed revenue controls in public schools. The group will deliver petitions, and audio taped and written comments from citizens to the governor.

Many state legislators have agreed to participate in walk, including State Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala, of Madison, Rep. Jon Richards, of Milwaukee and State Sen. Richard Grobschmidt, of South Milwaukee.

WEAC has not been involved in organizing the march, which is a grassroots effort.

Many other educators and citizens are planning mini-walks in their communities to help raise awareness of revenue controls. One group plans to walk from Sturgeon Bay to a Green Bay rally during the 10-day event.
