WEAC Makes No Recommendation in Superintendent Primary
WEAC is not making a recommendation in the February
20 primary for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
"There is no clear consensus among our members," WEAC
President Terry Craney said. "No one emerged as the obvious choice. Most
of the candidates agree with WEAC's position on many issues."
WEAC leaders meeting over the weekend agreed to wait
until after the primary to make a recommendation in the race. WEAC will
promote community discussions on education issues in the coming weeks.
"We believe the interests of the public and members
can best be served by generating meaningful discussions about the direction
of public education and what a state superintendent should support and
advocate," Craney said.
"The next superintendent has the very important task
of leading the state in ensuring that Wisconsin's great schools provide
classrooms that work for all children, because every kid deserves a great
school."
State Superintendent John Benson has announced he will not seek re-election.
Seven candidates have entered the race. The two top vote-getters in the
primary will advance to the April 3 general election.
