State to Get $20.1 Million for New Teachers

Wisconsin school districts will receive $20.1 million in federal funds next year to hire an additional 500 new teachers in the early grades under the Clinton administration’s new Class Size Reduction Initiative.

The money comes from $1.2 billion to be distributed nationally as a down payment on the president’s plan to hire 100,000 teachers over seven years to reduce average class size in grades 1 through 3 to 18 pupils per teacher.

Milwaukee Public Schools are slated to receive $6.9 million.
