Wisconsin Once Again Among Top States in Math and Science

Wisconsin students once again have proven themselves to be among the best in the nation in math and science achievement, according to a new assessment.

Wisconsin was listed among “highest performing states” in more than a dozen categories in the “National Education Goals Report: Building a Nation of Learners 1998.”

The National Education Goals Panel review assessed states’ progress toward the group’s education goals for the year 2000. NEGP highlights top-performing states and states that have made progress toward the goals, which range from making sure children start school “ready to learn,” to demonstrated student competency in academic subject matter, to teacher education and professional development.

“One of the most important results is that Wisconsin is among the top states in academic achievement in mathematics and science,” said WEAC President Terry Craney. “This report confirms what we have been saying all along: Wisconsin’s public schools are among the best in the nation.”

Craney said there are always areas that need improvement.

“Education faces major challenges and we stand ready to meet them,” he said.
