Services Held for Darwin Destache, President of WEAC-Retired
Services were held September 8 in Rice Lake for Darwin Destache, a longtime
WEAC leader who was president of the WEAC-Retired organization. Destache,
67, died suddenly September 3.
Destache was a physical education teacher at Rice Lake High School from
1960 until his retirement in 1991. He was the head football coach from
1960 to 1975.
Destache, who graduated in 1949 from Green Bay East High School, played
defensive halfback for the University of Wisconsin football team from
1950 to 1953 and played in the 1953 Rose Bowl.
He entered the Marines after graduating from the UW and served in the
Korean Conflict. He took his first teaching job in Galesville in 1956.
Destache was very active in the United Education Profession throughout
most of his teaching career. He was president of the Rice Lake Education
Association during its 1972 strike. He was president of the Northwest
United Educators from 1973 until his retirement in 1991 and was a regional
negotiator from 1973 to 1979. He also was active in the NUE-Retired Teachers
Association.
Destache also served on the WEAC Board of Directors and was active in
many NUE and WEAC activities.
