Madison Teachers Agree Not to Strike
Madison teachers Wednesday (October 29) agreed not to engage in disruptive
labor actions while they continue to negotiate a new contract with the
school board.
Dane County Circuit Judge Richard Callaway accepted an agreement between
the school board and Madison Teachers Inc. that allows for continuation
of negotations without the threat of a strike.
The agreement also protects Madison teachers and the union from any substantial
fines for a September 5 "sick-out."
Callaway became involved in the contract dispute when the school board
filed suit against teachers following the sick-out.
The understanding worked out between the teachers and school board Wednesday
lasts until June 30, 1999 -- the expiration date of the two-year contract
that is now being negotiated.
State mediator Bill Houlihan said bargaining will resume next week.
