DPI schedules teacher licensing meetings
Proposed changes in the way teachers are educated and licensed are up
for public comment in October and November. DPI is proposing sweeping
changes to teacher preparation and licensing requirements. The agency
has scheduled public information and discussion sessions before final
action on the recommendations. The meetings provide educators the opportunity
to discuss and provide input. Meetings are set for: Oct. 14, Oshkosh;
Oct. 16, Wausau; Oct. 20, Portage; Oct. 27, Milwaukee; Oct. 29, Platteville;
Nov. 4, Eau Claire and Barron; Nov. 6, Madison; Nov. 10, La Crosse; and
Nov. 12, Green Bay.
Study of global education set
Governor Thompson is creating a council to study making Wisconsin students
competitive in the global marketplace. The council, headed by Kikkoman
Foods executive Milton Neshek, will review all facets of international
education in Wisconsin, including teacher and student exchange programs,
enhancing relationships with the international alumni of Wisconsin colleges
and universities, and using technology to link UW programs with programs
throughout the world.
Teachers nominated for presidential awards
Twelve Wisconsin teachers are in the running for the Presidential Awards
for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching program this year.
This years science finalists are Karl Beighley, Southwestern Wisconsin
Elementary School, Hazel Green; Karen Mesmer, Baraboo Junior High School;
Jeanne Radke, Schulte Elementary School, Sturtevant; Sharon Ryan, Rib
Mountain Elementary School, Wausau; Larry Scheckel, Tomah Senior High
School; and Donald Vincent, West High School, Madison. The mathematics
finalists are Gail Alger, Wilson Middle School, Appleton; Paul Becher,
Hadfield Elementary School, Waukesha; Louisa Havlik, Kegonsa Elementary
School, Stoughton; Faye Hilgart, Blair-Taylor Middle School, Taylor; Connie
Laughlin, Steffen Middle School, Mequon; and Kerri Wood, River Heights
Elementary School, Menomonie.
