Educators voice support for United Wisconsin: Walker’s priorities are not Wisconsin’s priorities

Posted: 10/11/2011 10:01:00 AM

WEAC, Wisconsin’s largest union representing teachers and other public school employees, released a statement of support today for United Wisconsin’s efforts to recall Governor Scott Walker. WEAC President Mary Bell, a teacher from Wisconsin Rapids, offered the following:

“Wisconsin has a long tradition of valuing public education. Even in tough economic times, education has always been a top priority in our state. Since taking office, Governor Walker has shown time and again that he has the wrong priorities for the state. He has put corporate interests ahead of our schools and our students by cutting $1.6 billion from school funding while giving tax breaks to corporations.

“In Wisconsin, we have long enjoyed a culture of teamwork, collaboration and respect for one another and our various professions. From our public schools to our sporting teams – there’s a sense of pride and tradition in the way we do things in this state.

“Governor Walker has clearly opted for a different approach since he took office – and as a result he has divided this state by imposing harmful budget cuts and extreme legislation designed to silence the voices of teachers, nurses and others who keep Wisconsin running smoothly.

“Wisconsin needs a leader who understands that in our state, people are the priority – and the way to move this state forward is by working together.”

We told Walker that this day was coming.  He dismissed the crowds in Madison, saying that they were from "out of state".  He failed to listen to the workers of the state and undermined our progressive, democratic traditions.  This fight became more than just the public workers versus the governor and the republicans.  It was soon clear to me that the fight was between the governor and the working class in Wisconsin, with the governor supporting his rich friends.
    Thank you for Standing Strong!
