Tuesday, April 5, is spring Election Day in Wisconsin. There are several crucial school board, city council and judicial races throughout the state, as well as local referendum initiatives and the statewide election for superintendent of public instruction.
With turnout in non-partisan spring elections traditionally low, small pockets of votes can make a big difference for Wisconsin's great schools. WEAC President Stan Johnson emphasized the importance of voter turnout on behalf of candidates and initiatives that promote great schools and classrooms that work for every child.
"Vote for great schools," Johnson said.
Register for 'Shape Up Wisconsin Kids'
Shape Up Wisconsin Kids, an annual event that promotes regular, lifelong physical activity, takes place on Wednesday, May 11, in K-8 schools throughout Wisconsin.
Schools are urged to register now for the event, which challenges children to sustain at least 30 minutes of continuous aerobic activity on that day. The registration deadline is May 1.
Schools that report 100% participation are eligible for a drawing. Three schools will be randomly selected to win $5,000, $3,000 or $1,000. The drawing will take place May 13.

April 4, 2005 Two new OnWEAC features for teachers and staff
Thanks to a new syndication service provided through NEA Interactive, OnWEAC has added two features: classroom tips from NEA's popular Works4Me program; and national news updates for education support professionals.
NEA Interactive is NEA's revamped Web site at www.nea.org. One of the new services is syndication, which automatically updates headlines in specific areas of the affiliate Web site and links to information on NEA Interactive.

A national Web site makes fun of the Wisconsin legislators who plan to reintroduce the Taxpayer Bill of Rights initiative (TABOR) on April 15, which is tax day. A blogger for thinkprogress.org said the first day of school, when students will likely notice TABOR's deleterious effect on their education, would be a better "symbolic" day than tax day. http://www.weac.org/Ca pitol/2004-05/march05/taborblog.htm
