WEAC RA is this weekend

Hundreds of WEAC members from throughout Wisconsin who serve as WEAC delegates will gather in La Crosse April 22-24 to set the organization's policy and budget for next year. Delegates will make major policy decisions, adopt a program budget, adopt resolutions, and elect two NEA directors and an alternate NEA director.

WEAC's founders believed strongly in the importance of democracy within the organization. The RA is the best example of that democracy in action.

Keep fighting TABOR

The reintroduced so-called Taxpayer Bill of Rights measure does not have enough co-sponsors to pass, but there are still forces at work on behalf of the proposed constitutional amendment. WEAC President Stan Johnson said it is important for WEAC members to keep fighting the proposal and speaking out against it.

"WEAC members have fought so hard and so well against TABOR as part of a larger coalition, and we need to keep the pressure on through the Cyberlobby and through the local media to make sure this flawed and reckless fiscal policy does not become part of our state's Constitution," Johnson said.

TABOR, is a proposed state constitutional amendment that would severely restrict the ability of governmental units to raise the resources they need to provide quality services.

Representative Frank Lasee reintroduced the measure on April 15, the day that tax returns were due; a ploy WEAC President Stan Johnson said is further illustration of the fact that TABOR is nothing more than a public relations gimmick.

WEAC radio ads stress importance of supporting great schools

WEAC is launching a radio advertising campaign this month to generate support for Governor Jim Doyle's 2005-07 state budget proposal, which makes historic investments in public education while providing relief for taxpayers.

Four 60-second spots, named Great Schools Budget Minutes, feature the great schools message and information about the need to support the governor's budget and end school funding cuts that are detrimental to the quality of education in the state. Each ad uses the voice of a WEAC member, student or parent.

Only eight of the 19 state employee bargaining units have reached 2003-05 contract settlements.

The rally will start outside the Capitol at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 21.
