WEAC hires new executive director
Daniel Burkhalter, who has been director of government relations for the Illinois Education Association since 1993, is WEAC's new executive director.
The WEAC Board of Directors approved the appointment of Burkhalter Friday. He succeeds Michael Butera, who left in November to take a position with the National Education Association. WEAC General Counsel Bruce Meredith has been acting executive director.
"I am honored to be selected as WEAC's new executive director," Burkhalter said. "WEAC is one of the most respected education associations in the country. WEAC has built a reputation for its strong commitment to great schools, to children and to the interests of its members, and I want to continue in that tradition."

State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster won re-election by a large margin Tuesday, capturing approximately 62% of the vote. Her challenger, State Rep. Gregg Underheim, received 37%.
WEAC members recommended Burmaster's re-election because of her dedication to providing great schools for Wisconsin's children. Since her first term began in 2001, Burmaster made a top priority of closing the achievement gap between poor and minority children and white students by working to expand the SAGE class-size reduction program, 4-year-old kindergarten, and school breakfast programs. http://www.weac.org/News/update/2004-05/4_11/2.htm Students roll up sleeves for Beloit schools
College students planning to become teachers will give five schools in the Beloit School District a spring face-lift on April 16-17.
Approximately 150 members of the Student Wisconsin Education Association will clear brush, stencil walls, paint trim, organize books, and donate school supplies and other materials at the schools over the weekend.

The Children's Great Schools Fund needs to add 59 new WEAC members between now and October 2005 in order to meet its goal of contributing $75,000 to WEAC's recommended candidate for governor in 2006. The Children's Great Schools Fund conduit exists to support candidates for state office in Wisconsin who support great schools. http://www.weac.org/News/update/2004-05/4_11/4.htm
