| Governor's budget in step with Wisconsin values The budget unveiled by Gov. Jim Doyle is in step with the values of Wisconsin residents, who know the value of our investment in great schools, according to WEAC President Stan Johnson. “Gov. Doyle is offering a solid, balanced plan to use taxpayer resources wisely,” Johnson said. “The budget offers realistic solutions, not gimmicks.” Johnson said the governor’s plan to restore two-thirds state funding of public schools will create classrooms that work for children throughout Wisconsin, and it will provide real property tax relief for residents. “The proposal puts kids in classrooms that work,” Johnson said. “It’s an important goal that should be met when state funds are adequate. The budget makes education a top priority with its historic investment of $850 million in state support for public schools. And that’s on top of additional investments in programs like transportation aid, the SAGE class-size reduction program, 4-year-old kindergarten and other education initiatives.” The governor’s budget would also repeal the Qualified Economic Offer law, which has unfairly restricted teacher compensation over the last decade. “We applaud the governor for restoring a fair collective bargaining law for teachers,” Johnson said. “The QEO remains a roadblock to attracting and retaining the best and brightest teachers for our children.” Johnson said the governor also understands the best way to continue growing the economy is through a well-trained work force. “He clearly understands that a commitment to the Wisconsin Technical College System is an important part of achieving that goal,” Johnson said. “Gov. Doyle’s budget is balanced, fiscally responsible and invests in Wisconsin’s priorities including a commitment to great schools.” |
