The Wisconsin Education Association Council and the National Education Association are extending an open door to Governor Thompson and Wisconsin delegates at the Republican National Convention.
WEAC and the NEA are inviting Governor Thompson and other Wisconsin delegates to an education forum in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
"We all want great schools for every child in the state," WEAC Executive Director Michael Butera said. "The question is how to achieve that goal. We hope delegates will join us as we discuss education issues during the convention, and continue that discussion after we return to Wisconsin."
Butera and two retired WEAC members who are delegates to the convention are attending the August 1 Partnership for Public Education Brunch and Policy Forum, which recognizes organizations, elected officials and individuals who support children and public education. The former WEAC members are Sonja Maas of Bowler and Carl Toepel of Sheboygan.
The NEA co-sponsors the forum, along with the Republican Mainstream Committee, a group of moderate state legislators; the Republican Main Street Partnership, composed of moderate members of Congress; and the WISH List, which works to elect moderate, Republican women. The forum is at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue hotel, at 11:00 a.m. Aug. 1.
Three congressional members - Michael Castle of Delaware, Nancy Johnson of Connecticut, and Constance Morella of Maryland - are presenters. Governor George Ryan of Illinois, Senator George Voinovich of Ohio, and Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania have been invited to present.
