Guy Costello
Vice President
Wisconsin Education Association Council
Guy Costello, a teacher at Lakeview Elementary School in South Milwaukee for 16 years, began his term as vice president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) in August 2007. He was elected to serve a three-year term.
Costello has more than 30 years experience in union, electoral and political organizing. Before becoming an educator, Costello worked for eight years with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union in California and another eight years as a political organizer in Chicago. He was active in the Illinois Citizen Action Organization before leaving Chicago to become a teacher in South Milwaukee. Through all of his ventures, Costello says his most important accomplishment is the large number of his former students who have gone on to be the first members of their families to attend and graduate from college.
Costello served as a member of the WEAC Board of Directors (1995-2001) and chair of the WEAC Legislative Committee (2001-2007). He was a member of the Department of Public Instruction Professional Development Plan (PI 34) Committee (2002-2003). He was a state delegate to the National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assembly (1995-2005), receiving recognition as Delegate of Distinction in 1998.
Costello served as president of UniServ Council #10 (1995-2001) and was a Council #10 Executive Committee member (1993-1995). Through his involvement with Council #10, he participated with other UniServ presidents in the development and implementation of the Great Schools initiative. His leadership roles within the South Milwaukee Education Association included legislative chair, vice president and building representative. Among his accomplishments at the local level, he helped organize a local coalition to pass a $40 million referendum for a new high school.
Costello holds a master’s degree from National-Louis University, Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
WEAC is a professional organization representing the public policy, labor and professional interests of its more than 98,000 members. Great schools benefit everyone, and WEAC’s mission is to support public education and the men and women who work in Wisconsin’s public schools.
