Wisconsin students scored an average 83 points above the national average on the SAT college entrance exam, according to 2007 results released Tuesday (August 28, 2007) by the Department of Public Instruction.
The critical reading score was 587 in Wisconsin, compared to 502 nationally. Mathematics was 598 points in Wisconsin and 515 for the nation. In writing, Wisconsin scored 575 compared to 494 for the nation.
DPI said 3,816 of Wisconsin’s 2007 public and private school graduates took the SAT. In Wisconsin, 6% of 2007 graduates took the SAT, while 70% took the ACT. Historically, students in Midwest states, including Wisconsin, take the ACT as a college admissions test rather than the SAT. Nationally about 48% of 2007 graduates took the SAT.
Wisconsin students tied for second in the nation on the ACT, whose results were released earlier in the month.
