National Education Association President Reg Weaver remembers the strength, tenacity and dedication of Coretta Scott King. The first lady of the civil rights movement passed away Monday (January 30, 2006).
"We have seen images of Coretta Scott King by her husband's side, supporting Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King's efforts to gain peace, equality, and social change. Yet, Mrs. King was a leader in her own right. Like her charismatic husband, she felt the urge to serve."
"Days after Dr. King's assassination, she led a march through the streets of Memphis, Tennessee .
She was committed to continuing her husband's work. In the following decades, Coretta Scott King championed civil, human and workers rights in the United States and around the world."
"We salute Coretta Scott King on this day, as we remember a woman of dignity and determination. We thank her for her sacrifice and diligence. We mourn her passing, but are grateful for the time she was here.acting as a peaceful servant and fighting for a brighter future for all."
