Thirty-nine Wisconsin teachers have earned national certification this year from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the board announced Tuesday (November 20, 2001).
Wisconsin now has 74 nationally certified teachers. The number of state teachers earning certification has been increasing each year, from eight in 1999, to 23 last year, to 39 this year. More than 100 WEAC members are currently pursuing certification for next year.
Teachers earn national certification only after undergoing a rigorous, yearlong performance-based assessment process. The certification process involves an in-depth analysis of the applicant's teaching practices, a subject-specific standardized test, and a demonstration of an applicant's contributions to the profession and local community.
"Great schools depend on great teachers and staff," Wisconsin Education Association Council President Stan Johnson said. "All the WEAC members who achieved National Board certification this year have shown their dedication to children and great schools by going through this difficult process in order to make sure they provide every child with a classroom that works. Certification is a nationally recognized symbol of teaching excellence."
WEAC provides candidates with support materials and works with regional offices throughout the state to provide workshops for candidates. For more information about the certification process, see the OnWEAC Resource Page on National Certification.
