Cathy Anderson provides valuable insight of the expectations for “Contributions to the Profession” – Portfolio Entry #4 to 2005-06 candidates attending the WEAC Winter Conference “Dare to Think-Writing Retreat II.”

Message: My National Board Journey began in 1998 when 22 exceptional teachers and I jumped in with both feet to attempt to be the first group of NBCT’s in the state. With Andy Kuemmel, Wisconsin’s first NBCT, as our mentor and the assistance of WEAC, 8 of us managed to survive the first generation assessment and become National Board Certified Teachers. We really had no idea what National Boards were all about…existing on faith, a prayer, and adrenaline…very similar to today’s candidates!
Since my certification, I have had the privilege of working with many wonderful teachers as they embark on their own personal journey for professional excellence as they seek national certification. I have mentored candidates through cadre groups, online, one-on-one, given many workshops, made numerous presentations and read many, many entries for successful candidates. It has been part of my on-going professional journey to continually seek stimulating professional conversations with educators with the intent of making my own practice the best it can possibly be.

National Board Certification has also presented me with many wonderful professional opportunities. I had the honor of being chosen by the National Board to serve as the Chairperson for the Early Adolescence Science Standards Review Committee as well as being able to attend a recent National Board Convention in Washington D.C.

I am currently an 8 th grade physical science teacher and science department chair at DeLong Middle School in Eau Claire, WI. In my twenty-six year career, I have taught chemistry, physics, computer science, general science and physical science.
