Lynda Sullivan meets with central Wisconsin NBCT’s to plan support programs for NBPTS candidates in their area.
Message: I achieved National Board Certification in 2001. I continue to teach in Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools and as adjunct faculty for St. Mary’s University.
National Board Certification was an outstanding and rigorous process. It was reflective, affirming and empowering -the best professional development experience of my career. As a reflective practitioner, I analyze my teaching looking for concrete evidence of improved student learning. I use what I learn from my teaching to inform and improve my future practice. Affirmation - National Board Certification sets the bar for excellence. Validation of teaching excellence comes with being nationally recognized as an accomplished teacher. Empowering – Since, receiving certification, I completed my doctorate from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. The title of my research was Pathways to National Board Certification. The primary aim of my research was to explore the nature of the task of becoming a National Board Certified Teacher. Of particular importance was the identification of the factors and supports related to achieving certification. Findings from this study indicate that there are no blueprints of genetics or training for creating a highly qualified teacher. Rather, quality teaching is learned and it is possible that teachers committed to learning have the potential to improve their practice and student achievement. National Board Certification is a major commitment requiring professional and financial support.
As WEAC’s Central Wisconsin Regional Coordinator, I hope to build a quality candidate support program that offers year-round access and support opportunities for National Board Candidates through regional and statewide workshops, alongside opportunities to receive support from NBCTs trained in candidate support.
