Oakfield Education Association member Paul Helm's students are competing in an engine endurance contest sponsored by Moraine Park Technical College. During the challenge, the students will use a six-horsepower lawnmower engine and modify it for optimal fuel efficiency. "Students competing in the contest learn math, measuring, problem solving, teamwork, and reading and comprehension skills," Helm said. "It is a shame that vocational programs like this that offer "hands-on" learning are the ones being eliminated in Wisconsin due to budget cuts and revenue caps."
