Northwest United Educators (NUE) members and staff are assisting striking workers at the Shadow Plastics plant in Rice Lake. The 18 union members at this plant have been on strike for several weeks over unfair labor practices by the employer. The plant is owned locally, and has refused to bargain in good faith. Employees are represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 73A. UFCW is also trying to organize another plant in Rice Lake, and NUE allowed the union to use its meeting room for organizing efforts.

In August, union leaders spoke to the NUE Board of Directors about the strike. The NUE Board authorized $900 to be sent to the strike fund that evening, and NUE bargaining units were encouraged to raise money locally for the strikers. Chetek raised $167.40. Contributions are being sent to the UFCW Strike Fund, Local 73A. This photo was taken after the August 28 NUE Board meeting, when NUE Executive Directors Toby Paone (right) and Tim Schultz (behind the striker with the red sign) and WEAC employee John Peter delivered food to the strikers.

UPDATE: In late September 2003, the striking workers reached a tentative agreement with management.
