About 100 teachers, education support professionals, administrators,
school board members and others write to their legislators at a postcard-writing
party in a church basement in Beaver Dam.
Participants wrote primarily to Sen. Scott Fitzgerald
and Rep. Jeff Fitzgerald about how they and students are being affected
by a projected $700,000 Beaver Dam school district funding shortfall
for next year. On April 19, the school board voted to issue preliminary
layoff notices to 26 teachers.
They also wrote to Senate Majority Leader Mary Panzer
and Assembly Speaker John Gard about their opposition to the so-called
Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) or any other tax freeze proposal. TABOR
would severely limit the ability of local governments to raise taxes.
Some Republican legislators are considering the possibility of bringing
TABOR up for a vote in the Legislature. It would be advanced as an amendment
to the State Constitution.
The Beaver Dam Education Association and the Beaver Dam
Support Staff Association organized the event, which generated 275 letters
at the church and another 30 off site.
