10/23/2009 11:35:35 AM

An estimated 3,000 American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian
educators, students, elders, advocates, and tribal leaders attended the four-day 40th annual National Indian Education Association Conference in Milwaukee. The theme for the convention was
“Shaping Our Future Wisdom Keepers.”
The conference included opening ceremonies where American Indian tribes in Wisconsin and the country were represented by U.S. Veterans, elders and teens.
Among the participants, above, left to right, were Alan Caldwell, a Vietnam Veteran and member of Menominee Nation; Hillary Egan-Waukau, a student at Maple Dale School in Fox Point, who represented Menominee Nation teens; and David James (D.J.) Whitehorse Klauser, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, who is a Major in the Wisconsin Army National Guard.
