Art of giving helps disabled students

Ron Jordak

From the TRUE VIEWS, Three Rivers United Educators

Poynette High School art teacher Ron Jordak, was one of just 32 art teachers selected nationwide to participate in a “Power of Art” workshop at the Lab School of Washington. The Lab School of Washington is internationally known for its programs for children and adults with learning disabilities.

“Necessity is the mother of invention,” Ron said. His student wanted to make a clay pot but couldn’t fit his wheelchair under the table which held the electric clay wheel. Jordak created a drawing and enlisted the help of fellow teachers and students to turn his drawing into a reality. It took about a year of research and hard work. Jordak said the effort was low-budget – the wheels alone for such a table could cost around $2,500 in school arts catalogs. “We recycled as many materials as we could,” he said.

The student’s first work? A perfectly formed flower pot to brighten someone’s day. “It was just awesome,” Jordak said.
