From the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
To celebrate National Teacher Day and Teacher Appreciation Week, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards® (NBPTS) is distributing a public service announcement (PSA) to radio stations across the country that was submitted by Sheila Kohl, a 6th-grade teacher at West De Pere Middle School in De Pere, Wis.
In the months leading up to National Teacher Week, NBPTS conducted a PSA contest via its online community, NBCTLink. Kohl’s entry (below), offers crucial advice on how to “help teachers help your kids” by getting involved.
Parents, is school different today? Are your children studying things you don’t remember? Well…then, learn right along with them. Help teachers help your kids – get involved. A message brought to you by America’s 64,000 National Board Certified Teachers. Listen to PSA
Kohl is among the more than 500 National Board Certified Teachers in Wisconsin who have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review.
Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review. National Board Certification is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward accomplished teachers.
While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, NBCTs have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. Certification is achieved through a rigorous, performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete. As part of the process, teachers build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, video recordings and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Additionally, teachers are assessed on their knowledge of the subjects they teach.
