NEA program for women provides training for leadership positions

Applications are now being accepted for members interested in taking part in the NEA Women’s Leadership Training Program, Campaigning to Win (CTW). The training will be offered Nov. 15-18, 2007.

Applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, September 14. Fifty participants will be selected, based on criteria developed by the NEA Women’s Issues Committee, and notified during the week of October 8.

CTW provides members with a better understanding of the election process for key association positions at the local, state and national levels. Training focuses on electing candidates who are responsive to association issues, especially women’s concerns.

Participants will learn the following general strategies:

• Weighing personal issues and experiences when deciding to run for office.
• Determining which Association office to seek.
• Developing a basic campaign plan.
• Managing time efficiently while campaigning.
• Making effective use of technology.
• Raising funds.
• Preparing and delivering speeches.
• Delivering a speech on current issues.
• Presenting yourself well.

The program is open to all association members. However, persons who are announced candidates for local, state or national association office during the NEA’s 2007-08 fiscal year (September 1, 2007-August 31, 2008) will not be eligible to participate.

In applying for CTW, candidates should consider:

• CTW is an advanced, intensive three-day workshop program.
• CTW is designed for members who have served in some association leadership capacity and have plans for future leadership roles in the association.
• A team composed of Women’s Leadership Training Program peer trainers and NEA’s Human and Civil Rights staff will conduct the CTW training.
• The full program does not provide any time for other activities, such as tours or recreation.
• NEA pays for travel and lodging. An acceptance of selection to the program is a commitment to attend all sessions of the training.
• Participants must secure leave from their employers. NEA will not reimburse for substitutes or per diem.
• If selected to attend CTW, participants are expected to arrive by 4:30 p.m. on November 15 and depart after 1 p.m. on November 18.
