More than 200 Student WEA members painted, cleaned, fixed and brightened schools in Prescott over the weekend (April 12-13, 2008) to demonstrate their commitment to schools, children and their future profession. The college students – who are all studying to be teachers – were participating in the annual Student WEA Outreach to Teach project, which benefits schools and children in a selected community and sheds light on the damage caused by school district revenue caps.
"This year stands out because it marks our 10th year of helping to make Wisconsin public schools a more enjoyable place to learn and teach," said Annika Gangeness, Student WEA secretary and coordinator for this year's event. Student WEA is made up of approximately 2,000 members from colleges and universities across the state who have joined WEAC as student members.
"Outreach to Teach is an opportunity for the citizens of Prescott to work together with our local teachers' association and Student WEA membership to improve our public school facilities," said Bart Appleton, president of the West Central Education Association-Prescott local. "We are honored to work with local community organizations not just to improve school facilities, but also to help promote the importance of building coalitions between Prescott's community groups and its public schools. As we all know, great schools benefit everyone in our community."
Student WEA hosts the annual Outreach To Teach event because it gives future teachers the opportunity to work with a community that supports its schools, students and staff, Gangeness said.
“Outreach To Teach is not only an opportunity to highlight the great public schools of Wisconsin, but also to bring to light the funding issues our public schools face,” Gangeness said. “Revenue caps and budget cuts have impacted many districts such as Prescott. We applaud Prescott citizens because last fall, with overwhelming support from this community, they passed a levy to relieve some of these budget cuts.”
Outreach to Teach major co-sponsors included WEA Trust, WEA Trust Member Benefits, West Central Education Association, NEA Student Program, WEAC-Retired, and the UW-Stout and UW-River Falls Schools of Education.
