He also celebrates 50 years of teaching
Works by longtime WEAC leader Allen Caucutt are on display January 7 through February 11 at the Cedarburg Cultural Center as part of a celebration that coincides with the 50-year anniversary of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Caucutt and artists Bill Schulman and Shirley Schulman – whose art work is also on display in the West Gallery – are graduates and 50-year alumni of the UWM Art Department. Also on display in the East Gallery will be works by UWM Emeritus Professor of Art Laurence Rathsack. Caucutt said he, the Schulmans and Rathsack all trace their artistic roots to the UWM Art Department. "Shirley, Bill and I each represent 50 years of active studio production," Caucutt said in his invitation to the art show. "Laurence represents the talented faculty that nurtured our artistic souls. It was in 1957 that Bill and I had our graduating art exhibit at UWM. This is an exciting 50-year reunion for us both. Shirley graduated two years ahead of us." The free, public opening reception is 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 14, at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.
Caucutt – who taught for more than 42 years in the Milwaukee and Maple Dale-Indian Hills school districts and is in his eighth year of teaching at UWM – also celebrates his 50th year of teaching this spring. Last year, Caucutt was named Outstanding Teacher Educator of the Year by the Student WEA. Caucutt also has been very active in North Shore United Educators. Caucutt and the Schulmans have remained very active in their studio work as well as in the Wisconsin Art Education Association. Bill Schulman and Caucutt are past presidents of WAEA, and each has served for more than six years with the National Art Education Association Board. Bill Schulman has spent the past 35 years as a professor of art and art education at UW-Stout. Bill Schulman is widely known for his encaustic paintings (on copper and other substrates) as well as watercolor and collage. Shirley Schulman is a highly regarded painter who works in acrylic and watercolor media. Caucutt, a well-known sculptor and printmaker living in Thiensville, will display his recent bronze and welded sculptures. In the East Gallery, Rathsack will present a sampling of his paintings and drawings from the past 50 years. Posted November 22, 2006 |
