It is time for communities to regain a stronger voice in how their schools are run. And it is time to rethink the way public education is financed in Wisconsin. It sounds like a big job, and it is. But it is one we can tackle with the support and cooperation of parents, teachers, school employees, school board members, lawmakers, and communities.

We must give our schools back to our communities, our local school officials, and school employees. Through participation and partnership, parents, teachers, school employees, communities and local school boards know best how to use their resources and address the educational needs of children in their communities.
Governor Jim Doyle assembled the Governor’s Task Force on Educational Excellence to study school finance and make recommendations for improvements in the way the state invests in public education. The Wisconsin Education Association Council applauds those efforts and urges all citizens to urge the task force and their legislators to always remember the impact that school funding has on education excellence.
Wisconsin has great schools. We know what it takes to build and maintain great schools: high standards, a safe and orderly learning environment, highly trained teachers and staff, and above all, support and cooperation. We need community involvement to win renewed public support for fair and adequate funding levels, so that all children have access to quality learning opportunities and new technologies. And we strongly encourage cooperation among parents, teachers and community leaders, who can work together to provide our children with the best education possible, because every kid deserves a great school.
