Apply now for Great Schools Quality Grants

Once again WEAC is offering several Quality Schools Grants to local associations or UniServs that develop materials to support implementation of PI 34. With full implementation of PI 34 on the horizon, it's important that our members are prepared. This year we are offering two "levels" of grants for districts preparing to implement the new licensure requirements.

In addition, we have added a third option-- piloting mentor training materials developed by Kathy Larson and WEAC's Professional Development Academy. Each type of grant is described below:

1. PI 34 Implementation Grants for Veterans: for associations/districts/ UniServs that are well-prepared to implement PI 34.
   
   
2. PI 34 Implementation Grants for Beginners: for associations/districts/ UniServs that have done very little to prepare for PI 34 implementation.
   
   The Veterans and Beginners grants will be awarded in amounts from $2,000 to $4,000 and are to be used during the summer and fall of 2004. We hope to award approximately 15 grants.
   
   
3. Piloting of Mentor Training Materials: for associations/districts/UniServs interested in piloting materials developed by Kathy Larson (co-author of The Mentoring Year) in partnership with the WEAC's Professional Development Academy. These mentor training modules are designed to provide high quality, research-based training and support in the following areas: Guiding Principles of PI 34, Performance-based Professionalism, Mentor Roles & Responsibilities, Communication Strategies, Reflection, Student Learning, The Professional Development Plan, Building a Mentoring Community, and Unique Districts Requirements for Mentoring.
   
   We plan to award two or three grants to pilot the mentor training modules in amounts from $2,000 to $4,000. The grants are to be used during the 2004-2005 school year.

Are you interested in one of the mentor pilot grants? If so, contact Deb Berndt via e-mail (Berndtd@weac.org) for additional information.

Are you interested in a "Beginners" or "Veteran" grants? If so, follow the directions below. Your proposal should be well written, complete, coherent, and reasonably detailed; include evidence of association involvement in the process, including participation by a representative of the local bargaining team; demonstrate willingness on the part of the district to work with the association to develop materials; and be practical in its goals and procedures.

More specifically, if you apply for one of the "Beginners" or "Veterans" grants, complete and return the application form along with other required written materials on or before April 5, 2004. The accompanying written materials must not exceed 5 pages (typed, double spaced, and numbered), excluding the required application form. If you include other materials, please understand that proposals will be judged only on the required pages. There is no required format for the application. However, your written application must address the following two components:

1. Project or Program Objectives: You should describe briefly the objectives that you intend to meet with the grant funds. Use specific language when you write your objectives so that the reader understands exactly what they mean.
   
   
2. The Budget: You should include a budget in the amount of the funds requested that describes the types and amounts of expenditures proposed. Be specific so that the reader understands exactly how the funds will be used.
   
   The following are some examples of allowable expenditures:
   • holding school, district, or community-based meetings;
     
   • meeting the professional development needs of those working on the project;
     
   • developing materials/products;
     
   • paying stipends to those who work on your project; and

   Grant funds are not to be used for the purchase of equipment (e.g., computers, copying equipment, etc.).

Important dates:

Proposals must be received on or before April 5, 2004.

Grant recipients will be notified no later than April 23, 2004.
