Its
never too early to pick up a book, to read with a child, to give them
a look. And, its never too early to start planning for the sixth
annual NEA / WEAC Read Across America celebration.
The yearlong reading extravaganza that culminates around the birthday
of the great Dr. Seuss will be held in Wisconsin the week of March 3.
Thats when the ubiquitous Cat in the Hat a Read Across America
star for the past six years will be attending reading parties across
the state.
Reading is a life lesson that should be taught
as early as possible, said WEAC President Stan Johnson, who is the
states reading chair.
Hawthorn Hills Elementary School in Wausau will host
the kick-off. In 2003, the March 2 birthday of Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss)
falls on a Sunday, so many reading parties will be held on March 3.
Susie Hunsicker, a 3rd-grade teacher at Hawthorn Hills,
said she is excited to have Johnson read to her students during their
RAA celebration: Reading is so fundamental to education. Its
a wonderful chance to do something extra for our students in reading,
she said.
WEAC has produced stickers and bookmarks and will send them to UniServs in January. For more information, go to www.nea.org/readacross.
