Three
MTEA members have won an NEA Foundation for the Improvement of Education
(NFIE) grant for their innovative proposal to create a home-school connection
using the Internet.
Robin Booth, Mary Little and John Thomas work at Garfield Elementary
School in Milwaukee, and received the $2,000 grant for their work with
the "Super Science Friday Club." Each week, the teachers instructed
students to conduct an inquiry-based science experiment at home with their
parents. After completing the assignment, students and their families
shared their discoveries on the school's Web site. The grant money will
fund the club for another year.
NFIE offers grants of $1,000 to $3,000 each year to fund educators' big
ideas. The grants are awarded to promote collaborative efforts that lead
to student achievement of high standards.
Applications for NFIE grants can be submitted at any time, and are peer
reviewed on a year-round, ongoing basis. To apply for a grant, visit www.nfie.org/programs/howtoapply.htm.
