Parent and Family Involvement

Parent and family involvement in education is the key to the academic success of every child because the parent is a child’s primary educator. Research continues to show that family involvement is positively associated with success in school. Students do best when they are raised by supportive parents who expect them to achieve at the highest range of their ability.

Talking Issues

  • The school, family, and community are overlapping influences on students’ growth and development. As children’s first teachers, family members have a profound and continuing effect on students’ attitudes toward learning, growth and development.
  • Parents and teachers agree that the type of parent involvement that is most appropriate is that which occurs in the home.
  • Personal responsibility on the part of students is important. According to research, many students are not motivated to do well in school, work too many hours outside the home, fail to do their homework, and watch too much television.
