Students beat nation in math, reading

Wisconsin students again exceeded national averages in mathematics and reading on the 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress exams.

Wisconsin students eligible for free or reduced-price school meals averaged about 25 scale score points lower than students who are not economically disadvantaged, an achievement gap that is similar to the nation.

By racial/ethnic group, achievement gaps for Wisconsin also are apparent. Wisconsin's achievement gap between black and white students in reading is the worst in the nation. http://www.weac.org/News/2007-08/sept07/naep.htm

Residency requirement unfair, panel told

The Milwaukee Public Schools' residency requirement is causing good teachers to leave the district and is discouraging others from applying, Milwaukee teacher Debbie Karow told an Assembly committee.

Karow, who is required to live in the city of Milwaukee, is having a very difficult time finding an affordable home that meets the needs of her family. http://www.weac.org/Capitol/2007-08/sept07/residency.htm

West Bend teacher wins Packer sweatshirt

Susie Weston, a high school teacher in West Bend, is the winner of a Green Bay Packer executive sweatshirt. Weston was one of two members who correctly guessed the total final score of last Sunday's Green Bay Packers-San Diego Chargers game. Her name was selected randomly to win the prize.

To play OnWEAC's Packer score contest this week, guess the total final score of this Sunday's Green Bay Packers-Vikings game and qualify to win a Packer executive sweatshirt valued at $79.95! You only have until game time to enter, so consider this your two-minute warning. http://www.weacm.org

Personal challenges can enhance teaching

As a teacher, it's easy to wonder why students can't come in, sit down, be quiet, and get it right the first time. Columnist Erica J. Ringelspaugh finds that challenging herself to try new things helps her remember how students feel. That approach helps her listen, instead of responding automatically, when they are frustrated or confused.
