Assembly budget work: 'incomplete'

The Assembly Republicans' plan to separate education funding out of the state budget debate is counterproductive, WEAC President Mary Bell said in giving them a grade of "incomplete."

"The conference committee needs to do the work of deliberating on a whole budget in order to truly address the concerns of children, educators, families, and communities in Wisconsin," she said. http://www.weac.org/Capitol/2007-08/sept07/edbudget.htm

NCLB not fair or flexible, committee told

The federal 'No Child Left Behind' law "is not fair, not flexible and not funded," NEA representative Becky Pringle told the Wisconsin Senate Education Committee. Pringle testified with WEAC President Mary Bell at the informational hearing, which committee chair Senator John Lehman (D-Racine) said was designed to gather input that will be forwarded to Wisconsin's congressional delegation. http://www.weac.org/Capitol/2007-08/sept07/nclb.htm

Feingold backsTeachers at the Table Act

U.S. Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) will be introducing the Teachers at the Table Act of 2007, a bill that would create a Volunteer Teacher Advisory Committee to advise Congress and the Department of Education on the impact of No Child Left Behind on students, their families, and the classroom learning environment. This legislation is the Senate companion to the Teachers at the Table Act introduced by Representatives Carolyn McCarthy and Lee Terry in the House and is fully paid for through offsets. http://www.weac.org/Capitol/2007-08/sept07/teachersattable.htm

Comprehension should be goal in testing

Students have become well conditioned to answering the literal, fact-level questions that researchers say comprise 90% or more of those posed by teachers. The problem is, those questions have little to do with the comprehension of written texts, says Reading Room columnist Doug Buehl. http://www.weac.org/News/2007-08/sept07/readingroom.htm
