School referendums: 30 pass, 31 fail

For 26 school districts in Wisconsin, a total of 30 school referendum victories will at least allow them to temporarily keep their heads above water in the face of growing financial constraints brought on by revenue caps and the state's failing school funding system. 100 teachers win Kohl Fellowships

The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship Program has announced recipients of the 2008 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students and teachers. The $1,000 awards are being made to 100 teachers, their schools, and 182 graduating high school students. List of teacher winners

State's 8th-grade writing scores improve

Wisconsin public school 8th-graders improved their performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) writing assessment, with an overall average scale score of 158 for 2007 compared to 153 in 1998. Wisconsin's 8th graders also outscored their national counterparts, whose 2007 score was 154. However, Wisconsin's African-American students had the nation's lowest average scores. Read more
