4 named Middle Schools of Excellence
Wisconsin's first Middle School of Excellence awards have been awarded to Templeton Middle School in the Hamilton School District (Sussex), Medford Middle School, Bloomer Middle School and Colby Middle School. Judges examined the schools' efforts and accomplishments in the areas of collaborative leadership and professional learning communities; personalization and the school environment; and curriculum, instruction, and assessment. 50 cents can buy you happiness
Platteville teacher Amelia Armstrong says that a simple 50-cent thank-you note from a student amounted to "one of the most amazing moments of my career." Read Across America kicks off Feb. 29

Wausau contract maintains health plan
Wausau teachers have voted to ratify a 2007-09 contract that maintains their current health insurance plan. The 695 members of the Wausau Education Association had been working without a contract since July of 2007. Wausau education support professionals continue to work without a contract. Read more.
Bush 'digs in heels' on NCLB
President Bush has refused to make quality public schools a priority during his administration, and his final State of the Union address confirmed that his legacy on education issues will be one of failed teach-to-the-test experiments, voucher schemes, and unfunded services for children and public education, NEA President Reg Weaver said.
