Smiley: Teachers are undervalued

Education is the great equalizer in our society and the key to not only solving our social problems but to rescuing our children, radio talk show host Tavis Smiley said in a sometimes emotional and animated keynote speech at the WEAC Convention. "I believe teachers are the most undervalued resource in our society," Smiley said to a packed house at the Midwest Airlines Center in Milwaukee. "There is no more noble profession than educating our children." Read more

Bell: We must close achievement gaps

Wisconsin must resolve to close its shameful achievement gaps between white and black students, WEAC President Mary Bell said in an address at the WEAC Convention. "To our members, these scores are not just numbers or abstractions - they are the children we see each and every day," she said. Read more

Help promote safe schools in Wisconsin

As Wisconsin's Safe Schools Week (October 21-27) draws to a conclusion, there is still time to use this opportunity to e-mail your legislators and ask them to support two proposals that promote excellence in education by helping to maintain safe and orderly schools. Both proposals have strong bipartisan support. The first, Senate Bill 42, requires school boards to adopt an anti-bullying policy, and the second, Assembly Bill 484 and Senate Bill 251, empowers education support professionals and teachers to deal with disruptive and dangerous students in the school setting. NEA releases school crisis guide

In celebration of America's Safe Schools Week (October 21-27, 2007), the NEA Health Information Network released its new online crisis guide that provides step-by-step advice for schools and districts to use before, during, and after a crisis. "School Crisis Guide: Help and Healing in a Time of Crisis" was created by educators for educators to help keep schools safe and to help students and staff return to learning after a crisis. Project helps schools reduce prejudice

The Teaching Tolerance project of the Southern Poverty Law Center offers grants of $500 to $2,500 to preK-12 classroom teachers for projects designed to reduce prejudice among youth, improve intergroup relations in schools, and/or support educator professional development in these areas. Wisconsin Way visits Green Bay, Superior

Wisconsin Way forums will be held this week in Green Bay (Tuesday) and Superior (Thursday). These are the fifth and sixth of 12 forums scheduled throughout the state. Wisconsin Way is a grassroots project that pulls together the support and resources of a wide variety of interests to find ways to build a stronger Wisconsin economy that can better support public services, including education. Public input at these forums will serve as the basis for developing strategies. Read more
