School breakfasts on the increase

The 2006-07 school year saw the largest growth in state history in the number of school breakfasts served to students, said State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster. WEAC supports bill about ethnic mascots

WEAC submitted testimony Thursday to the State Senate Education Committee in support of Senate Bill 132, allowing residents to object to their school's use of an ethnic name, nickname, logo, or mascot by appealing to the state superintendent. Read more

Assembly rejects budget compromise

The Republican-controlled State Assembly on Monday rejected Governor Doyle's compromise 2007-09 state budget proposal, just hours after it was passed by the Democrat-controlled State Senate. The Assembly vote was 44-53, largely along party lines, and the Senate vote was a pure 18-14 party-line vote. Gov. Jim Doyle and legislative leaders met this afternoon to discuss a possible budget compromise, but no public announcement of a deal was planned as of 4:15 p.m. Read more

For her devotion to education, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster presented Megan Dixon with a 2007 Milken National Educator Award on Tuesday, which brings with it a $25,000 unrestricted cash award. Read more
