AAS degree changes postponed

The deadline for implementing structural changes to the Associate of Applied Science degrees has been moved to the 2007-08 school year. The WTCS state office cited concerns communicating new information to students and problems related to the treatment of general education courses as significant reasons for delaying implementation.

Applied technology review falls short

The WTCS state office made public in late September its programmatic review of the applied technology centers at Gateway Technical College (BioCATT and CATI).

Although the review provides important backround information and several useful recommendations, the state office review largely failed to address the most significant issues related to the creation, structure and ongoing operation of Gateway's applied technology centers.

Winter Conference

WEAC's 2006 Winter Conference is February 3-5 in Madison at the Marriott West. This year's conference will again include a WTCS track specifically for technical college faculty and staff. The WTCS track - which will include sessions on political organizing, influencing district boards, and roundtable with WTCS leaders - will be held on February 4.

The cost of the conference - which includes the training, hotel and meals - is only $50 if participants register by December 9.

Collegiate transfer programs on fast track

A flurry of recent activity will likely result in technical colleges developing so-called collegiate transfer programs.

Spurred on by potential legislative action, the technical colleges are working to quickly develop a set of procedures that provide for the review, adoption and implementation of collegiate transfer programs.

WEAC produces WTCS-focused PSA

The WEAC Public Relations Campus has developed a public service announcement touting the important role Wisconsin's technical colleges play in our state's economy. The message aired on television and radio stations throughout the state in October and November.

New faculty handbook

WEAC recently received a grant from the National Education Association (NEA) to produce a handbook for new faculty.

We'd like to incorporate your thoughts into this handbook. We are particularly interested in hearing from faculty who are still new to the WTCS. What information do you wish you had during your first year with the technical college?

Please send your input to Andrew Lyons at lyonsa@weac.org.
